An LED is a special kind of semiconductor diode that can emit light when a voltage is applied at its terminals it in proper polarity. It has become very popular in sighting solutions because it is 90% more efficient than an incandescent light bulb consuming similar power. It can emit light in infrared or visible light wavelengths.

High brightness red and amber LEDs use the aluminum indium gallium phosphide (AlInGaP) material system. Blue, green and cyan LEDs use the indium gallium nitride (InGaN) system.
