An optocoupler is a semiconductor device which is an LED and a phototransistor in a single package. It allows an electrical signal to be transmitted between two isolated circuits. In an optocoupler an LED emits infrared light and a phototransistor detects the light from the LED. It is usually used to provide the feedback signal in switch mode power supplies. Optocouplers are also referred to as optoisolators in electronics.
